The current capital of Morocco, the city of Rabat was founded in 1150 by the Almohads, who built there a citadel (future Kasbah of Oudaïa), a mosque and a residence. This is what is called a ribat, a fortress.
Rabat takes advantage of its status as capital: It is the best maintained, the most flowered and the most opulent of Morocco but its history remains an authentic city, the opposite of a capital without soul.
Salé, the twin city of Rabat from which it is separated by the river Bouregreg, is rich in a thousand-year history. Several monuments testify to its past greatness. Founded at the beginning of the 12th century by the Almohads. The city was then fortified by a series of ramparts pierced by large gates, including those of Bab Mrisa near the city center, Bab-Bouhaja, Bab El Khémiss and Borj Addoumoue (Tower of Tears).
